Abstract
Art songs in each country have specific characteristics that define the unique culture and history of the region. In the 20th century, solo song was a popular genre for singers and composers in Spain. Spanish songs usually had specific characteristics that drew upon folk song through guitar-like accompaniments and rhythms. My research will focus on one composer that helped establish this definite Spanish style, Fernando Obradors. I will highlight upon his specific compositional characteristics and how he portrayed the Spanish sound in his songs through the use of native Spanish folk songs and dance rhythms. I will specifically focus on three songs, "Corazón, porqué pasáis?" "Del cabello más sutil," and "Chiquitita la novia" and explain upon how these songs are representative of his style.
