Abstract
The Age of Chic, Jazz Age, Flapper Decade, and lastly the Roaring Twenties, were all appealing names to describe the period of time between World War I and World War II. How the 1920s became such a grand inspiration from then until now is striking. Art Deco, one of the most famous styles of furniture and architecture in history, came out of this period. Even now, a century later, Art Deco is drawn upon for inspiration from artists, designers, and architects around the world. The age of the 20s was a new time for the world to get a better life after WWI. It is phenomenal how much people accomplished during this time and then how shortly after the decade, the Great Depression took over. During this time women in America gained the right to vote, the first television transmitter was invented, Prohibition is put in place with the 18th amendment, Gandhi preached for mass civil disobedience, King Tutankhamun’s Tomb was opened, Ford Motor company announced the 40 hour work week, Route 66 opened and cars became the main way of travel. All of these events dictated the style of Art Deco. All of the sudden architects were designing skyscrapers, and everyone was looking to the architects for design. Cars were being reinvented to add more comfortability and function. Clothing lines from people like Chanel were creating a new way of fashion that did not hide the woman’s body. International influence was huge. The style of Art Deco prevails because of the unique quality and persona that it gives to people.
