Abstract
Bartok's String Quartet No. 5 is an experiment in the use of symmetry as an organizing force in music. The five movements of the work come together to create seven-fold symmetry on a large scale. Harmonic structure, style, and melodic themes provide the foundation for this structural symmetry. The early movements draw on a variety of cultural and aural influences, which highlight and reinforce the power of symmetry when those sounds return in the second half of the quartet. Bartok's creativity with structure and form, as demonstrated in this quartet, provides a compelling and cohesive musical experience for the listener.
