Abstract

The state of Utah has many canal corridors that offer potential opportunities for siting active transportation routes. In the past a variety of concerns such as liability and maintenance have inhibited the construction of canal trails. As of recent, local governments and canal companies have worked to overcome these challenges and construct canal trails. The purpose of this project is to document various case studies of successful canal trail projects, understand challenges inhibiting new projects, and create a guidebook for future projects. In order to document successful case studies, canal companies both with and without trails are interviewed to understand obstacles and potential solutions. Local governments and planning organizations are also interviewed to document their involvement in successful projects. Results show that liability, maintenance, privacy, funding, and land ownership are all challenges to constructing canal trails. Successful projects have been accomplished through strategic planning, public involvement, pooling funding sources and detailed license agreements. The information obtained from the project is compiled to create a guidebook for stakeholders who pursue canal trail projects in the future.
