Abstract

Abuse is a societal issue all around the globe especially emotional and verbal abuse whereas it has the least amount of awareness and no clear definition. My research had the sole purpose of studying how childhood emotional and verbal abuse affects the victims' future adult relationships. My research looked into the long term effects abuse has on the psyche and behavior, including various primary source studies that applied the concepts into environmental situations, and how they influence relationships. It has been discovered that emotional and verbal abuse received during childhood create or worsen pre existing mental health conditions such as; depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and low self esteem. It can also create dysfunctional behavioral patterns including; paranoia, obsessive-compulsive disorders, insecure attachment styles and narcissistic characteristics. As symptomatology of emotional and verbal abuse develop during childhood they become a permanent and hard to alter disposition in future adulthood. The traits listed previously negatively effect relationships by decreasing genuine connection, sexual activity, emotional vulnrability along with increase the likelihood that the victim will be apart of a new abusive relationship either as the abused or the abuser. The research also looks at the disability perspective, which can worsen the effects of emotional and verbal abuse in addition to the socioeconomic status which in relation can be negatively affected in adulthood. Limitations can be due to environmental situations of abuse, whether it’s received at school, in the home, by a peer or a parent since the research was more generalized.
