Abstract

Using the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education’s most recent Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System (STARS) report for Utah State University, the analysis of the sustainability education efforts at Utah State University revealed large gaps in comparison to akin public universities in both the state of Utah and the western U.S. For this needs assessment and subsequent program plan, focus was placed on the STARS criterion with a direct correlation to academic curriculum or educational engagement of students (STARS AC-EN). Through the revitalization of existing sustainability-centered professional development at Utah State University, monetary incentivization for curriculum reevaluation and implementation, and effective marketing strategies of applicable coursework, this program plan targets Utah State University's low-ranking STARS AC-EN scores by increasing the number of courses designated by the university as sustainability-focused and sustainability-inclusive, leading to more graduates with working knowledge on sustainability, and a greater ability for Utah State University to adequately serve students and communities throughout the ever-changing future.
