Abstract

Brahms' Intermezzo in B minor, Op. 119, No. 1 is a profound and beautiful piece that exemplifies the composer's mastery of harmony, melody, and form present in his final works for piano. This composition reflects the cyclical nature of life and also provides insight into Brahms' own personal struggles. Emotional intensity is achieved through harmonic tension and release, and effective interpretation requires pianists to deeply understand these harmonic processes. An examination of both the state of Brahms' experiences during the time of this composition and the harmonic aspects of the piece can deepen one's understanding and appreciation of this late Romantic masterpiece.
