Technical Session XI: Educational Programs
Abstract
Fifty student-built satellites have been launched in the past four years – as many as had been launched in the twenty years before. But this explosive growth has come at a cost: mission. About half of the satellites launched since 2003 carry no mission other than student education. But does that matter? For independent schools (those without long-term government sponsorship), the answer is a qualified yes. In this paper, we will analyze the launch history of student-built spacecraft to find recommendations for how independent schools can build sustained studentfocused satellite projects.
