Abstract
Biography- Dr. Jean-Michel Contant is Secretary General of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA). Contant has served IAA for nearly 30 years with secretariat offices in Paris, Bern, Bangalore and Beijing. In this capacity, he is responsible for regional secretaries in 33 countries that regularly bring together the world’s foremost experts in astronautics to recognize the accomplishments of their peers, to explore and discuss cutting-edge issues in space research and technology, and to provide direction and guidance in the non-military uses of space and the ongoing exploration of the solar system. Contant is also Chief Executive Officer of ASTS Company. Contant began his career as a structural space engineer at Aérospatiale, now European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company N.V. (EADS), and was responsible for dynamic studies of the Ariane launch vehicle. While at Aérospatiale, Contant also oversaw programs such as the S3, M20 and M4 ballistic missiles. He is the founder of the Council of European Aerospace Societies (CEAS) and former vice president of the French Aerospace Society (AAAF). He is a fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), the AAAF and the Royal Aeronautical Society. Contant is the recipient of many notable awards, including the Yuri A. Gagarin Gold Medal from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, the IAA Social Science Award, the French Aeronautical Medal, the Russian Tsiolkovsky order, and the Silver Medal of France.
