Abstract

Biography - Dr. Reuther currently serves as the Acting Director for Crosscutting Capability Demonstrations in the Office of Chief Technologist of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Headquarters. Previously, Dr. Reuther served as the Lead of the Test and Verification (T&V) Office for the Orion spacecraft development. After graduating from the University of California Davis with a Bachelors, Masters, and Ph.D. in mechanical and aeronautical engineering, Dr. Reuther performed foundational research in Aerodynamic Shape Optimization. Next, he served as the computation aerothermal sub-team lead for the Columbia Accident Investigation Board (CAIB) and NASA’s Return to Flight (RTF) efforts under the Space Shuttle Program. He earned the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal and the NASA Silver Snoopy Award for his leadership and technical achievements supporting the Space Shuttle CAIB and RTF activities. Dr. Reuther also served as a core team member on the NASA Exploration Systems Architecture Study (ESAS) team commissioned by former NASA Administrator, Michael Griffin. The 15 member ESAS core team led a multi-center team of hundreds of NASA engineers and scientists to develop the architectural roadmap for NASA’s future human space exploration systems. In recognition for his contribution in ESAS, he earned the NASA Exceptional Service Medal. After working on ESAS, Dr. Reuther became the Project Manager for the Orion, Thermal Protection System (TPS), Advanced Development Project (ADP), where he lead a team to successfully deliver two integrated heat shield designs for the Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) preliminary Design Review. For his exceptional management skill as the TPS ADP Project Manager, he earned the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal.
