Abstract
Traditionally, spacecraft manufacturers have relied on pyro element driven separation system components. However, these have some severe drawbacks from the generation of significant separation shocks to safety concerns and long lead times. Some of these shortcomings were addressed with the development of compression spring-based and clamp band separation systems. But even these types of separation systems have their own unique drawbacks, including long reset times and large levels of shock generated when separation occurs.
