Abstract
Objective:
Traditional space power systems face severe limitations: chemical batteries decay in extreme thermal swings or drain over long dormant periods, and radioactive units lack the specific power needed for peak operational loads. BYU Rocketry’s Phoenix payload, a 3U CubeSat that competed in the 2026 SDL Payload Challenge addresses these gaps. Phoenix is a proof-of-concept mechanical battery that augments primary power systems, enabling peak-load operation and recovery from dormancy.
