Description

BACKGROUND: Many stars exist in binary systems, where two stars orbit a shared center of mass. The Gaia Space Telescope measures positions and motions for over a billion stars, but very close pairs can appear as a single object. These are called Gaia two-parameter (G2P) stars, and some may be unresolved binaries.
