Abstract
The University in Transformation: Global Perspectives on the Futures of the University and Higher Education in Transition: The Challenges of the New Millennium provides historical perspectives and describe forces for change on university campuses. The various chapters examine how shrinking budgets, public calls for accountability, and virtual technologies are changing the goal of higher education as a public enterprise from board preparation of an educated citizenry to narrow training of highly qualified specialists. While neither book is written specifically about teacher education, teacher educators would do well to ponder the issues raised, particularly as they apply to how we practice university-based personnel preparation.
