Description

The goal of this project is to consider the impact of generative artificial intelligence (AI) has on college student's perceptions on their future. People typically view their futures optimistically, predicting positive things are likely to occur while negative things are unlikely. The rapid proliferation of AI provides a possibility to consider boundaries and mechanisms for the tendency to view the future optimistically. We propose two studies to explore the relationship between AI and college student perceptions of their future. Study 1 is designed to test if AI limits the typical optimism college students demonstrate when projecting their own futures. Study 2 is meant to asses the relative differences in students' judgements of realistic-, best-, and worst-case scenarios. We predict that AI will lead to reduced optimism in college student's perception of their future.
