Abstract
I have recently had an opportunity to trade in my Introduction to Anthropology course (which was dropped from the curriculum) for Civilization/Humanities - one of the five core Gen Ed offerings. In addition to the change in content, I saw this as a good time to change the way I teach. I wanted to shift the major burden of transmitting information from lecture to other media, including texts, the World Wide Web, and material like timelines and maps that I prepared and made available to students. I would use class time primarily for guided discussion, films, and illustrated lectures. Class activities would be used to put flesh on the bones of the skeletal view the students obtained from their reading.
