Abstract
This article describes an authentic parent education project that involved early childhood teacher education students in two states. The Family Literacy Bags (FLB) project was developed as a means to engage children and their families in reading together and to assist parents in using books with their children in effective ways. It is grounded in the research and professional literature on parent involvement and literacy development (i.e., home book reading with young children). In addition, the principles of using developmentally appropriate practices with college students were incorporated throughout the development and expansion of the project.
