Description

This qualitative study is part of a larger community assessment project to understand the health and social support service needs of LGBTQ+ youth and their families in Box Elder County, Utah. Assessment research was designed in response to community concerns about limited availability of LGBTQ+ specific services in the rural county and a critical need to address suicide prevention among LGBTQ+ youth as a health disparity population. The project consists of an online survey and interview study facilitated by the Utah State University’s Transforming Communities Institute in collaboration with a panel of community partners and two graduate classes in the Social Work Department.

The interview study aims to give in-depth context on issues related to availability of services for LGBTQ+ youth and their families, gaps within services, barriers to accessing services, and organizational capacity issues related to service delivery. Following the survey, semi-structured interviews with 10 local service providers were conducted in November 2023. Using two-cycle coding, analysis identified four themes that consider: 1) key risk factors that impact the well-being of LGBTQ+ youth; 2) major barriers to accessing services for local LGBTQ+ youth and their families; 3) unique complexities within the LGBTQ+ service landscape of the rural county; and 4) significant resources for creating change to improve services and support well-being for LGBTQ+ youth and their families. Findings from this study will assist with developing solutions to improve community well-being through equity, inclusion, and capacity-building efforts related to service delivery for LGBTQ+ youth and families in Box Elder County.
