Abstract
Birds damage cultivated pecans in several states. Hoffman (1924) and Aldous (1944) documented damage to pecans by American crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos). Murray (1975) estimated that blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) damage averaged 0.43% of the total pecan crop in a Louisiana orchard; however, he did not account for food storage behavior reported in jays (Hardy 1961:88), and only pecan cultivars were sampled. Blue jays are also considered a major depredator of pecans in Georgia (Sparks, pers. commun.).
