Description

Observations of electric fields and low energy electrons inside auroral arcs have been made on two rocket flights. In both cases the electric field increased at times to greater than 60 m V / m within the arc. The equatorward component of the field showed the greatest increase. On one flight the field reversed direction near the equatorward boundary of the arc. Electron detectors on the same rocket observed fluxes within this arc of 5 x 109 (cm^ ster. sec)"1 for E > 10 eV. Equatorward of the arc the net flux of electrons w a s occasionally out of the atmosphere with the dominant flux at energies below 25 eV.
