Abstract
The literature on honey bees is so vast and incorporates contributions from such a wide range of different disciplines that few, if any, working scientists even pretend to be familiar with all of it (the author of this chapter certainly does not). Consequently, a given publication's pathways of influence are apt to be very strange and convoluted. As a case in point, consider a paper by A. Gerstacker with the formidable nineteenth-century German title, "Uber die geographische Verbreitung und die Ablinderungen der Honigbiene nebst Bemerkungen Uber die ausllindischen Honigbienen der alten Welt."
