Abstract

The present paper is an attempt to find correlations between the castes of the same bee species on the basis of the gross anatomy of the ventral nervous cord. Such correlation exists in the sense that the nerve cord anatomy differs from one caste to another (table I and figures). ln Apis mellifera L. the queen has a more centralized nerve cord than the workers, but in all other species studied the condition is reverse. Centralization is recognized by two factors: ganglionar fusion and cord cephalization without fusion.
