Abstract
North Davis Sewer District (NDSD) wastewater treatment plant must alter their treatment process to reduce total phosphorus (TP) and total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) in their effluent. NDSD treats ~19 MGD using biotowers and trickling filters then discharges final effluent to Farmington Bay (FB) of the Great Salt Lake (GSL) (Figure 1).
Alterations to NDSD’s treatment process must meet lower TIN and TP standards by year 2020 while planning for population increases through year 2050. Relocation of NDSD’s outfall from FB to Gilbert Bay (GB) would allow NDSD to meet less stringent standards.
NDSD plant operators prioritize reliability (40%), cost (30%), simplicity of O&M (20%), and environmental/social impacts (10%). MorningStar Engineering modeled current and future conditions, compared nine alternatives, and designed the preferred alternative.
