Description
In any research project, we generate valuable data and insights that don’t make it into any published product. That published product, too, may not reach audiences that could benefit from it and participate in contributing back to the overall project. How can we organize and carry out our research in ways that generate more value from our work and more contributions from relevant communities? Drawing on open-source software methodologies, in my work as a reporter and scholar, I’ve been experimenting with tools like wikis, version-control systems, and public spreadsheets to make available far more of my work than what I’ve been able to circulate through formal publication. I propose a participatory, skill-sharing workshop. I can offer a bit about what I’ve been doing, along some practices I’ve seen among others, but the heart of this workshop will be the experiences, experiments, and challenges that participants bring to share.
