Abstract
This study aims to: (i) provide an understanding of sustainability based on research that combines hierarchy, systems, and complexity theory; (ii) discuss the development of the criteria and indicators (C&I) of social sustainability; and (iii) present a set of C&I of the sustainability of small rural communities in the USA and Canada. The evaluation of social C&I is divided into: (i) whether social C&I for industrialized nations must differ from those developed elsewhere, or whether universal C&I are feasible; and (ii) whether certain social C&I genuinely measure sustainability. Finally, the standards required for sustainable rural American communities are discussed.
