Abstract
The question of alkali has many phases. Much work has been done on this important phase of soil science, particularly as it affects the agricultural products and native vegetation. These two phases of the subject naturally forced themselves upon men who tilled the soil for a livlihood and in late years thay have occupied the attention of many soil investigators. The reliability of this indicator value of native vegetation, (1) on a given soil has long since been established in a general way. This generalization has been used rather extensively in making a hasty survey of large possible agricultural areas. It has also been noted that certain plants seem to inhabit rather definite saline areas but very little if any work has been done in an attempt to link specific plants with a definite alkali-water condition. A plant that seemed to show such relations and one whos growth was likewise strikingly effected by some unknown conditions was selected for intensive study. In a given area this plant varied from a few inches in height to twenty or twenty-four inches. There was also great variability of branching habits, bloom and density of growth. The object of this project was to determine if possible the reasons for the noted variability by making an intensive study of it and its soil habitat.
