Description
As a PhD student, I entered my program passionate about research, but discovered a love for teaching and working with students. As a research fellow, I found myself somewhat limited in my ability to gain teaching experience within the traditional research program. I have worked with faculty to push for the development of a teaching certificate program aimed at graduate students, and through this process, I learned just how much power graduate students have in their own self-advocacy. I wanted to share some of these lessons to encourage students to take responsibility for their professional development and pursue opportunities outside of the lab and classroom, as well as to share the key strategies for success I found to be the most important.
