Description

Welcome to thinking about inclusive teaching through the lens of Threshold Concepts. In this breakout, we will expand our understanding of inclusive teaching using Threshold Concepts to help us diagnose potential barriers to student learning. Inclusive teaching involves increasing awareness of the dynamics within a course or discipline that affect learning. This work values experiences of students and recognizes that experiences are unique and impact learning. Inclusive teaching also involves being responsive and intentional about using strategies that support inclusive learning environments. Threshold Concepts, as described by Meyer & Land, are areas within learning that once understood, changes the way content is viewed. These specific areas within the content are crucial for conceptional understanding and the ability to move to the next stage of content mastery. Identifying thresholds or barriers to learning in our courses, programs, and disciplines can help us create strategies for making learning more equitable.
