So Now I Come to You With OER: Teaching With Open Educational Resources for Student Engagement and Success
Start Date
8-16-2023 12:00 PM
Description
Zero-cost course materials like OER help level the playing field for under-represented students who struggle to afford tuition and living costs. They contribute to higher test scores, lower failure rates, and lower dropout rates. Beyond affordability benefits, OERs' open licenses allow for modification. This creates the capacity for content to be more accessible, inclusive, culturally relevant, and more tailored to local needs than commercial teaching materials. OER also encourages Open Pedagogy (engaging students in materials creation or adaptation) which allows them to see themselves reflected in the work. Three recipients of USU Libraries' 2022 OER Grants will be on the panel. In this panel presentation, they will discuss their experiences around adopting, creating, and teaching with OER. They will relate how OER has influenced their students' learning and success, and offer advice to others interested in Open Educational Practices.
