Description

Contacts with people outside the United States offer USU students incomparable opportunities to try new activities, take on new roles, and enter into new relationships. Scholarly literature supports the benefits of study abroad (Kubota, 2016; Paras et al, 2019), as well as the benefits of international connections for students who remain on their home campus (Almeida et al, 2019; Buckner & Stein, 2020). Instructors play an important role in promoting and facilitating study abroad, as well as in internationalizing the curriculum here in Utah.

In this session, we will briefly review the research-established benefits of study abroad before we address common myths about study abroad. Then, we will describe five ways in which instructors can help students go on study abroad. Lastly, we will describe five ways in which instructors can internationalize their curriculum here at home.

Our conclusion will emphasize the crucial role played by faculty members in helping students go abroad and in bringing international perspectives into their classrooms.
