Approximately 20% of USU's students are the first in their family to seek a college degree. These first-generation college students tend to be tenacious, committed, and full of determination. They also may find much of the university experience confusing, unfamiliar, or intimidating, causing many to leave the university without a degree. In fact, USU's data indicates that this is our most vulnerable population with an attrition rate approximately 10% higher than USU's overall average. This session will outline specific actions faculty can take to help all students, but particularly first-generation students, to succeed and find academic belonging and learning excellence. Faculty will learn about the various supports and programs available to every student as well as those specifically designed for first-generation students. They will leave with recommendations for how to make courses and office hours more accessible and desirable to first-generation students.
