Description

In this presentation, we will discuss the curricular evolution of Business Communication, a 3000-level, research-intensive course that serves as a gateway for all undergraduate majors in the Huntsman School of Business. In the fall of 2019, we determined to develop a relatively simple assignment and course curriculum into an experience that better prepares students for working-world research and writing tasks. We overhauled the course and developed a case-based learning experience to place more emphasis on collaboration and research as foundational skills for student success. After multiple iterations, the course has evolved to incorporate an integrative learning approach in which students explore real-world problems relevant to international business while developing practical skills in project management, team-building, communication and writing, and research. In addition to fostering foundational research and communication skills, students also engage in critical thinking and peer learning in the process of researching, analyzing, and synthesizing data about international markets—helping students gain practical skills and lifelong learning habits. We'll discuss how the course evolved, take a deep dive into how learning experiences are scaffolded, and explore how our integrative approach can support student success at USU and beyond.
