Abstract
Citrus is a major food crop of the United States, and was valued at $664,682,000 in 1968-69 (Riehl et al., 1980). With world production at 46,219,000 metric tons in 1979-80, the United States grows 14,961,000 metric tons which represents over 32% of the world's total production (Anonymous, 1981). It produces about 36% of the world's oranges, 30% of its lemons and 75% of its grapefruit (Riehl et al., 1980). Although citrus is grown in some six states, 96% is produced in Florida, California and Texas. Florida alone produces 73% of the U.S. total with California and Texas accounting for 18 and 6%, respectively (Bullock and Brooks, 1975).
