Becoming Prepared for a Career
USU Jon M. Huntsman School of Business
As a student it can be difficult to know what classes to take or what careers to pursue. I’m happy to say that I have made it through that process and am starting my sales career on Monday with Nalco in Midland, Texas. Although the journey was not easy, it was worth it, and I owe a lot of that to the courses I took at the Huntsman School of Business.

Faculty Research - Chad Simon
USU Jon M. Huntsman School of Business
During the era when the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) was passed, audit committees were given heightened responsibility and faced more stringent requirements. However, according to new research by Huntsman accounting professor ChadSimon and his co-authors (see cite below), Congress and others may have overlooked one potentially important incentive with these updated requirements. The research team found an association between barely achieving or surpassing an analyst forecast benchmark and the stock options audit committee members hold or their annual stock option receipts.

In Europe on Scholar Semester
USU Jon M. Huntsman School of Business
From a textbook, I can learn about the United Nations: what it does, who it employs, how it works alongside national governments. But there is something surreal about being in the Geneva headquarters of the United Nations and realizing that working at such a renowned organization does not have to be a pipe dream. My semester of study and travel as a Huntsman Scholar has been filled with many such moments of clarity. Researching at Oxford University’s world-class Bodleian Library, witnessing the struggle of Syrian migrants firsthand on the Austrian-German border, learning from anAggie alum turned top-level executive at Barclays—all these experiences were accompanied by deep personal reflection about just how complex, beautiful and diverse our world is, and what small role I want to play in it.

Leaders Define Themselves
USU Jon M. Huntsman School of Business
One of the world’s most influential business leaders is a respected chief executive because, as she says, she “does not aspire to a title, but aspires to be a leader.” Cathy Engelbert leads more than 220,000 professionals as Chief Executive Officer for Deloitte LLP, and inspired hundreds of attendees at the recent Partners in Business Accounting conference at Utah State University. Engelbert’s leadership path started as captain of her collegiate basketball team. Attending Lehigh University on a lacrosse scholarship, she walked onto the women’s basketball team and later found herself leading her team on the court. As she maneuvered through her career, Engelbert attributed several principles to her success.

Most Important Financial Resolutions for 2015
USU Jon M. Huntsman School of Business
2015 might be your best year ever. It might be your neighbor’s worse. Recessions and economic downturns are no longer global or regional, but they are local to the point of being personal. Your work, your career, your employer is booming. You get raises and bonuses. Your neighbor is downsizing and hoping that unemployment is extended. With one or two changes, you could be your neighbor. In fact, you will be your neighbor. Eventually we will all be hit. So get ready to recover in advance.

Sharlene Wells Hawkes: Miss America, Sportscaster, and Entrepreneur
USU Jon M. Huntsman School of Business
From brains to beauty to business, Sharlene Hawkes has just about done it all. After winning the Miss America Pageant in 1985, Hawkes earned her bachelor’s degree in Communications from BYU, and later, a master’s degree from the University of Utah. She began her professional career at ESPN where she worked for 16 years as an award-winning sportscaster until she realized she was tired of living her life from the sidelines. Sharlene’s decision to be a part of the action has led her to what she considers her happiest career yet—founder of Remember My Service, a digital scrapbook for military service members and their families. However, her road from Miss America to a successful entrepreneur wasn’t all smooth sailing. Sharlene shared her top 5 principles for success (which coincidentally all start with the letter P) with the Entrepreneur Leadership Series (ELS) class this last Wednesday March 25th.
