“Chris tells me you are coming to Russia with me,” Dwight Israelson said to me one day last March. Professors Chris Fawson and Dwight Israelsen have worked for several years with officials at North Ossetia State University to establish an inter-university agreement to exchange faculty and students. Chris was unable to go this year, so he drafted me to be his replacement. I did not think I had committed to go, but it appeared I had been drafted so I agreed to go.

Beta Alpha Psi Wins Ernst & Young LLP Diversity Award

USU’s Beta Alpha Psi chapter was chosen as one of ten chapters in the nation to receive an initial award of $500 for a winning proposal for the Ernst and Young Diversity Award. The money will help fund the implementation of their proposal, which is to work with the SOA Quigley Ambassadors to communicate to high school students and undeclared majors the many career-friendly opportunities available to females in the accounting profession. A summary report will be submitted in May outlining the success of their proposal, which will make them eligible to be considered for one of five grand prize awards.

Freddy Ishola is a Recent Recipient of the AICPA Minority Scholarship

Freddy Ishola is a recent recipient of the AICPA Minority Scholarship. Recipients must demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, leadership and commitment to pursuing the CPA designation. Funding is provided by the AICPA Foundation, with contributions from the New Jersey Society of CPAs and Robert Half International. For four decades, this program has provided over $14.6 million in scholarships to approximately 8,000 accounting scholars.

Jim Quigley, '74, Former Deloitte Global CEO, Speaks to Huntsman School Students

Students in the Huntsman School of Business were given first-hand insight into leadership techniques employed by one of the most outstanding business leaders in the world. On November 16, Jim Quigley was the guest speaker at the Dean’s Convocation. Much of his address focused on the importance of trust and ethics in the workplace. “Trust and confidence are absolutely essential in order for a leader to be able to function effectively,” he said. “When trust and confidence in a leader weakens, that leader no longer functions effectively.” Mr. Quigley also spoke to a large group of accounting students about the opportunities and challenges facing them as they enter the accounting profession today. He stated that this was a very exciting time to be entering the accounting profession. There are more opportunities than ever before, but U.S. accounting students are competing for jobs against bright, hard-working students from emerging countries around the world. “To be successful, you must work hard and be persistent,” he said.

JoLynn Runolfson Selected as Contributing Author in Fraud Book

JoLynn Runolfson, SOA Lecturer at the Uintah Basin site, has been selected as a contributing author in a soon-to-be published book in the “Fraud Casebook” series authored by Dr. Joseph T. Wells, founder and Chairman of the Board of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. The book will be focused on financial statement fraud and is expected to be published in late June. JoLynn’s fraud case was chosen as one of only 47 cases out of 100 that were submitted for consideration. Her contribution is a write up for a case she managed while employed by Neilson Elggren LLP about loan losses on securitized asset pools.

J. Scott Nixon Appointed to USU Board of Trustees

Effective July 1, 2011, Governor Gary Herbert appointed J. Scott Nixon ('83 BA, '84 MACC) to a four-year term as a member of the Utah State University Board of Trustees. Scott, the Salt Lake City Office Managing Partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, has served on the Advisory Board of the School of Accountancy for the past 20 years except for the four years he was on assignment with PwC in Brazil.

Mark and Jennifer Erickson, Distinguished Young Alumni

Mark Erickson, '95, and his wife Jennifer were recognized as Distinguished Young Alumni at this year’s recent USU Homecoming festivities. Mark received his Master’s of Accountancy in 1995 from USU and began a career in public accounting with Tanner in Salt Lake City. He spent four years with Tanner before accepting a position with the SEC in Washington, D.C. After two years at the SEC, Mark rejoined Tanner. In 2001, at the age of 32, Mark became the youngest person to be promoted to corporate officer and member of the board of directors at Tanner. He has been serving as a partner in the firm ever since. Mark currently serves as a member of the School of Accountancy Advisory Board.

The All-In Campaign was launched in 2009 and we hope to see this list continue to expand! The School of Accountancy enjoys generous alumni support. This support is appreciated and necessary in our quest to achieve national recognition for your degree. The majority of such resources support student scholarships and activities. Funds are also used to build permanent endowments (now at about $4,000,000 and growing), provide continuing education for faculty, and support-targeted research efforts

Rosemary Fullerton Named UACPA Outstanding Educator

Dr. Rosemary Fullerton has been recognized by the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants as the 2011 Outstanding Educator of the Year. She will be recognized for this achievement on Friday, August 19 at the Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City. As a talented faculty member in the School of Accountancy, Dr. Fullerton teaches intermediate financial accounting as well as cost management systems at the graduate level.
