She completed both her undergraduate and graduate degrees at Utah State and has held academic positions at USU since 1994. SOA Faculty Receives National IMA Award
USU Jon M. Huntsman School of Business
Congratulations to Dr. Kari Olsen who was selected by the IMA Research Foundation to receive the 2016 IRF Emerging Scholar for the Competitive Manuscript Award. This award is given annually to a single emerging scholar (or lead author recognition) of management accounting who has received a terminal degree (Ph.D., DBA, Ed.D, JD) within the last seven years. His winning paper submission entitled, “CEO Narcissism and Accounting: A Picture of Profits”, co-authored by Kelsey Dworkis and Mark Young investigates the relationship between narcissistic personality characteristics in CEOs of Fortune 500 companies and financial performance measures of earning-per-share (EPS) and stock valuation. They found that firms with narcissistic CEOs have higher earnings-per-share and share price than those with non-narcissistic CEOs. They examined the mechanism driving the observed results and find that narcissistic CEOs are more likely to increase reported EPS through real and operational activities rather than accrual-based manipulations.

The Holy Grail of Information Security?
USU Jon M. Huntsman School of Business
Patent #9391962, “Multi-node Encryption”, is an idea that could potentially upset the entire internet industry. Describing the genesis of his idea, Huntsman Associate Professor Jeff Johnson offered the following analogy, “In the cyber world we have bad guys who are constantly trying to hurt us. Our defense against these bad guys is to build great stone walls that act as a shield. Unfortunately, over time the bad guys obtain machines that can crush stone. Surprisingly, our solution is to simply use more stones in the wall.” So, why then are we building our defenses out of the very source of our enemy’s strength?

The Huntsman Experience
USU Jon M. Huntsman School of Business
When Breanne Yamauchi, Business Administration and Marketing, ’18, tore her ACL just a few months before coming to Utah State University, she was crushed. She had always imagined herself balancing college sports with classes. Now that sports weren’t an option, she would have to look elsewhere for activities to define her college experience. This was a pattern that she would see over and over again – when one door closed, another one always opened.

Becoming Prepared for a Career
USU Jon M. Huntsman School of Business
As a student it can be difficult to know what classes to take or what careers to pursue. I’m happy to say that I have made it through that process and am starting my sales career on Monday with Nalco in Midland, Texas. Although the journey was not easy, it was worth it, and I owe a lot of that to the courses I took at the Huntsman School of Business.

Faculty Research - Chad Simon
USU Jon M. Huntsman School of Business
During the era when the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) was passed, audit committees were given heightened responsibility and faced more stringent requirements. However, according to new research by Huntsman accounting professor ChadSimon and his co-authors (see cite below), Congress and others may have overlooked one potentially important incentive with these updated requirements. The research team found an association between barely achieving or surpassing an analyst forecast benchmark and the stock options audit committee members hold or their annual stock option receipts.
