On April 1, 2022, Utah State University Moab celebrated the completion of a new building at a new campus location to provide higher and technical education opportunities to our community. Folks in Moab had heard rumblings of a new campus for decades, and now it was a reality. The need to celebrate was palpable. No fooling!

To commemorate the new building, we invited the greater Moab area community to participate in a time capsule. Folks were asked to submit stories that speak to the community of 2072 that provide a window into the life of our community now, and that share our hopes for the community in the future. The contributions, some with associated artifacts, were placed in a physical vessel that was buried at the ribbon cutting event. The burial site on the south side of the building was marked by a plaque on the edge of the patio.

The items in the physical time capsule are represented here. We are sharing this digital version with the public for the month of June 2022. Afterward, the files will be “buried” and inaccessible for 50 years until the physical time capsule is retrieved and opened on April 1, 2072. We hope you enjoy getting a sneak peek at the contents for a glimpse into the life and psyche of our community and what our hopes are for Moab 50 years into the future when the time capsules will be opened. I’ll only be 111 years old.

Sincerely,

Lianna Etchberger, PhD
