Abstract
The cost of housing across the United States is becoming a major issue that seems to be spiraling quickly out of control. The percentage of Americans who report that the availability of affordable housing is a major problem in their community is rising quickly, and it is becoming much more difficult for young adults to buy a home than in previous generations. The inability to afford housing, or anything beyond housing, has severe consequences across society. These include but are not limited to poverty, homelessness, poor public health, economic decline, population decline, high crime rates, and low education rates.Affordable housing is an essential tool to improve the conditions of society. However, it is important not only to create affordable housing for average and below-average-income individuals and families, but also to create spaces that will support, dignify, and empower residents as they work to improve their lives. This can be achieved through optimized space planning and construction methods, cost-effective architectural and construction materials and finishes of high enough quality to last a long time without compromising affordability, and an interior color and materials palette that is designed to comfort, dignify, and uplift the resident.
