Description

We know from the research that social-emotional learning strategies can encourage focus and motivation, improve relationships, and link to cognitive development. This presentation focuses on incorporating social-emotional learning and wellness strategies within higher education courses (both synchronous and Asynchronous session) to help strengthen roles, activities, and relationships in successful college students. Scholars have looked at the growing need to recognize teaching in higher education as cognitive, emotional, and embodied work. Within these growing bodies of research, there is a clear need to support students' emotional well-being as a way to enhance engagement in the classroom, improve social-awareness (such as respecting others, understanding other perspectives, etc.), and to aid in motivation, which can all lead to greater academic achievement. The purpose of the presentation is to provide attendees with the opportunity to examine how social-emotional learning (SEL) can be fostered through mindfulness, gratitude, and other wellness practices. Attendees will learn practical skills and techniques they can use in their own classrooms.
