Description

How can we help students take more ownership of their learning—especially when they seem disengaged or overwhelmed? Based on Norman Eng’s Teaching College, this session introduces the you, y’all, we framework as a practical model for designing class sessions that foster both student self-awareness and metacognitive development. The you, y’all, we framework helps instructors center each lesson around three key elements: (1) You — engaging students individually to reflect on their personal connection to the content, fostering self-awareness; (2) Y’all — encouraging small-group collaboration to deepen understanding and promote reflective thinking; and (3) We — synthesizing insights in a whole-class discussion to solidify meaning-making and encourage collective reflection.

This session will not only demonstrate the framework but will also model it in practice. Participants will reflect on their own teaching challenges, explore Eng’s ideas through examples from the book, and apply the model to a lesson of their own. Through this process, participants will gain strategies to incorporate metacognitive reflection into their lessons, helping students move from passive learners to active self-reflective thinkers.

By the end of the session, instructors will leave with actionable strategies they can use immediately—especially in courses where clarity, relevance, and metacognitive awareness are key to student success. This session is ideal for educators seeking to design lessons with purpose and foster deeper student engagement and reflection.
