Abstract
People constantly make choices whether to speak up or remain silent, and they continually weigh the risks and benefits of using their voices. Yet, research has found that “voice,” or speaking up, is considered a key to leadership. Prior research has clearly shown that “gendered beliefs about appropriate actions shape the interpretation and perceived acceptability of behaviors.” Beliefs about how men and women should speak and behave are widely accepted.
