Description

This Session will highlight a case study of a blended studio course that the presenter has transitioned from traditional in-person studio format to blended online studio format (OPDD 2430 Digital Technology for 3D Design). This course brings students through a scaffolding process to learn relevant professional level skills in 3D computer aided design. This is a required course and many students have limited or no prior skill in the software tools that are taught in this course. The range of students’ abilities to understand and apply course content varies widely and presents the instructor with special challenges to teaching which are addressed with the blended studio format. Studio format courses are ideal for helping students to apply knowledge and skills to high levels of creation (i.e., Bloom's Taxonomy). However, studio courses may be improved and made more helpful to students by incorporating recordings of demonstrations and other online tools that allow the student to acquire skills at their own pace. In the case of the highlighted course above, the students are taught to perform at levels approaching professional practice.
